Electronic Arts continues to strive for cost savings and this now has direct consequences for the Apex Legends workforce. There are now more layoffs here.
There have been a number of large waves of layoffs in the video game industry in recent months, with almost every major company being affected in some way. At Electronic Arts the whole thing is continuing again, as an entire department is now apparently being closed.
EA is now supposed to scrap the British quality assurance team for the long-running battle royale Apex Legends. An initial report stated that around 50 employees were affected, but it has since become known that the number of employees laid off as a result is closer to 40. Nevertheless: It is the next major layoff at a larger publisher in the industry.
The latest layoffs were first reported Insider Gaming citing anonymous sources. Accordingly, the employees were called together for a “business update” via Zoom; It was then announced there that their contracts would not be renewed and that they would have to look for a new job.
Bizarrely, loudly Insider Gaming Even managers and project managers were not informed about this step and were therefore caught off guard. Rather, they only found out about the layoffs from those affected.
The UK-based QA team for Apex Legends was set up in 2022 and was primarily responsible for quality assurance in the battle royale hit from Season 16 onwards. The closure of this team is not said to be due to its performance since then, but rather the general “restructuring of the business”. Actually, the team is said to have worked well and achieved all internal goals. The approximately 40 layoffs are now in addition to the 670 layoffs that EA had already announced within the company at the end of February.
For some of those affected, their employment contracts expire within a few weeks, meaning they now have to quickly look for a new job.
