In the run-up to Apple’s 2024 developer conference, there was speculation that artificial intelligence (AI) would play an important role in the new iPhone operat ing system, iOS 18, and that’s exactly what happened.

AI could make your everyday life with your smartphone easier. At the WWDC, Apple also presented the new features of iOS 18, but the focus is on artificial intelligence (AI). Apple is introducing “Apple Intelligence”, which comes with iOS 18, the new iPadOS 18 and the new macOS Sequoia.

This AI understands contexts, recognizes people such as your contacts, and makes suggestions to provide you with information that might be useful in a particular situation.

An important help here is the voice assistant Siri, which you can ask about an appointment you made in a chat app. Thanks to the AI, the conversation is taken into account and you can quickly see the most important information such as the time and meeting point.

You can also ask Siri for information or tips for a specific project. She then gets data from the AI ​​ChatGPT, with whose provider Apple cooperates. Using ChatGPT via Siri is free and you don’t need an extra account. It will be a great help for Apple users in everyday life to ask about all sorts of things and in many cases make searching on Google superfluous.

Support with correspondence

Apple Intelligence will also be used for emails, for example, it will immediately show you the most important information in the email overview preview and there is even the option of improving text drafts stylistically using AI. This means you can quickly write linguistically appropriate messages to specific people, such as students to their professors. Here, too, you save yourself the trouble of searching for email guides on Google – assuming the AI ​​actually works well in practice.

Your data should be safe

The US company Apple promises that your personal data will be safe when using AI. Apple has set up special servers for this purpose, but has no access to your information. It is also not stored anywhere and therefore, according to Apple, it is a feature that “can be trusted”.

What’s new in iOS 18

In addition to the AI, Apple has also introduced other innovations for iOS 18. First of all, you can finally choose many more emojis as quick reactions in Apple’s Messages app. Until now, the selection was extremely limited and rather frustrating, considering how many emojis you can choose in other messengers.

You will also be able to customize the size and color of your app icons on the home screen, as well as the Control Center. In the latter, you can now add your own prioritized settings.

Other new features include blocking and hiding apps, a new password collection app, special effects for messages such as exploding words, and the ability (on iPhone 14 or later) to send iMessages via satellite when there are cellular and internet problems.

iPadOS 18

Apple is also releasing a new OS version for its own tablets. With iPadOS 18, there will be a new “tap bar” at the top with various options. This bar can also quickly move to the side, so that it becomes a “sidebar”.

In addition, iPadOS finally gets the calculator app. It’s hard to believe. A special feature is the integration of the Apple Pencil, which allows you to write math problems in the app by hand. The app then solves the problems, even more complex ones.

Apple has confirmed that it will release iOS 18 in fall 2024. However, there is no release date yet. If you are looking forward to Apple Intelligence, you must remember that this feature is only confirmed for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPads and Macs with M1 chip.
