Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is hard at work on its next game, but the hit RPG is getting in the way of new ideas.
If you can believe it, it’s been a year since Baldur’s Gate 3 was released into Early Access. I know, I know, the passage of time is a daily existential crisis, but let’s put that aside for a moment. Larian is still developing the beloved RPG, and last month began accepting registrations for the upcoming seventh patch closed beta. That patch is due out in September, but of course, the studio is also working on several new “very ambitious RPGs,” and the Larian Leadership Summit was held early last month. But coming up with new ideas can prove difficult, especially when you’ve put so many good ideas into previous games.

To mark the game’s one-year anniversary, PC Gamer spoke with writer Adam Smith about the game, and how difficult it is to come up with ideas for the studio’s next game. “One of the biggest problems we have right now is that every time we talk about something, we say we did the same thing in Baldur’s Gate 3,” Smith said. “But it turns out that when we think back on it, we did a lot of things in Baldur’s Gate 3.” This isn’t actually a new problem for Larian, as it apparently faced similar issues with Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin.
“The same thing is true during development. Have they seen this pattern? Have they used these verbs in this order? Have they had this emotional arc? So you’re constantly trying to make sure they’re getting new experiences and not just repeating themselves, and you’re not just giving them content for the sake of content.”
Of course, Baldur’s Gate 3 did pretty well and won a ton of awards, so I’m sure Larian will do well. You just have to wait a while.
