Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red will be Ubisoft’s “next premium flagship title and the future of our Assassin’s Creed open-world role-playing games”. You read that right, the leaks for an Assassin’s Creed with Japan scenario were spot on.

Assassin’s Creed Red is being developed by Ubisoft Québec, the makers of the pre-predecessor Odyssey. Ubisoft veteran Jonathan Dumont also serves as creative director on the new project, having joined the company in 1999 but working on World of Warcraft for several years before returning for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

You can watch the short trailer for the new Japan game here; In a moment we’ll talk about what there is to see there:

AC Red Explained: Weapons, Setting, Gameplay

The video features a female assassin sporting two confirmed weapons: the familiar hidden blade on her left wrist – and a katana. Various small flasks can also be spied on her belt, which could contain poisons or black powder for smoke and flash bombs.

The architecture on display fits the scenario, feudal Japan. These include the iconic gabled roofs; the protagonist balances on one of them. It can be assumed that players in Assassin’s Creed Red will also be able to play a male hero again; the two predecessors offered this option and were also considered action role-playing games. According to Ubisoft, the AC Mirage announced for 2023 is an action-adventure; there is only one fixed hero here. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, as you can read in the preview:

  • Experience points, level ups and a talent tree
  • Multiple-Choice-Dialoge
  • Nebenquests
