Assassin’s Creed Shadows in a new controversy that never ends

Assassins, controversy, Creed, ends, shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is once again getting a lot of attention, but still not for the right reasons. A new controversy has just broken out due to a very big mistake by Ubisoft.

For Ubisoft, it’s clear: when we have good news on the one hand, like the announced return of one of the publisher’s cult series, there’s always something that has to spoil the party. And that’s the case here too with another controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The next part of the license is obviously not going well, everything fits together.

Another controversy weighing on Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The highly anticipated end-of-year game is once again overshadowed by a new controversy. After attacking Ubisoft for making Yasuke, a historical figure of African descent who actually existed, one of the two playable protagonists, and accusing the publisher of cultural theft going so far as to reach out to politicians in Japan, this time it’s a saber that’s the problem. So no, there’s no ethnic story about the katana, but this time it’s plagiarism.

On the occasion of the Japan Expo taking place here in Paris, Ubisoft has shared images of its immersive experience at the fair. A stand completely decorated in the colors of Japan that immerses us in the world of the next game. In one of the images we see a sword, and not just any sword.

In appearance, the katana is in the colors of the Assassin’s Creed Shadows game. Red and black on a vessel decorated with Japanese symbols, nothing to complain about. The problem is that this saber already belongs to a very large license. Internet users were very quick to recognize the deception, since it is nothing more and nothing less than a representation of the saber of Zoro, the hero of One Piece.

Ubisoft’s big ball

Yes, a mid-range item that is very easy to find on resale sites, far from the overpriced collector’s item of the game. A colossal mistake by Ubisoft, which will have to grit its teeth while many “fans” react on social networks with a now usual reticence and great meekness.
Mockery, calls for boycotts, insults… poetry that spreads all over social networks and makes enough noise to spark another controversy.

Ubisoft has not responded to this major error at press time, and the release on X is still not corrected. Playing dead may be a strategy, but we hope the sword has been removed from the stand…

In any case, this small mistake should not prevent Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming. The game remains highly anticipated and will be released on PS5, Xbox Series and PC on November 12, 2024.
