Hardware news Asus ROG switches to 3080 Ti and Ryzen 6000 for high-end laptops
After the announcements by AMD and Nvidia at CES 2022, manufacturers are starting to showcase their next-generation machines. Asus is of course in the game and is partially renewing its ROG series.
2022 is already developing into a rich year for laptops, as the major manufacturers use CES 2022 to introduce new high-end models and stock up on the latest chips from AMD and Nvidia. The Taiwanese Asus came to Las Vegas (almost) with overloaded laptops in his arms. We keep two particularly attractive models: the Zephyrus G14 and the Zéhyrus Duo 16.
Zephyrus G14: The compact format moves into the Radeon RX 6000S
Let’s start with the Zephyrus G14, a “gamer but compact” laptop PC that has the special feature of opting for a 14-inch screen. The first generation had us largely seduced by May 2020 and this new version seems to offer some great new features.
Externally, it differs slightly from its predecessor, this time offering a 16:10 format and thus a screen that is a bit higher than the 16: 9. It will be able to mount in 2560×1600 pixels (120 Hz) and Asus has announced a brightness of 500 cd / m2. The manufacturer has also reduced the frame around the screen, resulting in a panel occupancy of 91%.
On the side of the cover there is a system of mini LEDs that allow the user to display the text or animation of their choice. It’s pure gadget and aesthetic, but it adds a little more goodness to the product. In any case, the G14 is so easy to transport thanks to its weight of 1.75 kg and a thickness of less than 2 cm.
On the configuration side, Asus relies on 100% AMD of the latest generation, as there is a Ryzen 6000 processor (Ryzen 5 6600HS, Ryzen 7 6800HS or Ryzen 9 6900HS), but also a Radeon RX 6800S or 6700S graphics card. The two GPUs offer 8 GB of video memory and an 80-watt TGP that can reach up to 105 watts thanks to SmartShift technology (which requires some power from the CPU to switch to the GPU). In short, a small laptop that should have great performance in addition to looking out of place.
Zephyrus Duo 16: two screens and an RTX 3080 Ti under the hood
The Zephyrus Duo 16 takes up a concept introduced by Asus in 2020, namely the dual screen of a laptop PC. The main screen is therefore in the 16-inch format and offers a resolution of 1440p at 165 Hz. Note that this time the panel uses MiniLED technology for the backlight, which is supposed to drastically increase the brightness and contrast. Asus also announces a bright peak at 1200 cd / m2. Never seen it on a laptop pc. The second screen, located directly above the keyboard, is 14-inch and displays Full HD or Ultra HD resolution at 60 Hz.
On the configuration side, the Zephyrus Duo 16 goes up and relies on the latest AMD processors (R5 6600H, R7 6800H or R9 6900HX) and can accommodate up to a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti (135W TGP) on the graphics side. The presence of an HDMI 2.1 port also makes it possible to provide 4K 120Hz rendering on a screen or TV, especially with such a powerful CPU / GPU pair.
Zephyrus Duo 16 and G14: Price and Availability
The Zephyrus G14 will be available from $ 1,599 in Q1 2022. The Zephyrus Duo 16 will also be available from $ 2,999 in the first quarter of 2022.
