Atlas falls, a new game from The Surge’s Deck13, seems to have been overlooked by many. Given how intriguing the game looked, we thought it would be shown at the Summer Game Festival as part of a larger show, but it didn’t make a splash at Not-E3.
The good news is Deck13 done Show us all something new and excited to get our hands on the game: the fullest look at its structure, combat, co-op, and more.
Perhaps the most distinctive thing about Atlas Fallen — outside of its sand-covered world — is the game’s combat. It all went back to the Gauntlet you got early in the game, and it changed everything forever. Gauntlets basically turn you into a super version of yourself. That’s what lets you dash through the air and glide across the sand.
But the more interesting part is how it affects the game’s weapons, which change their form and function according to your needs. Attacks can be customized using Essences (obtained around the world), and that’s where the depth of the playstyle comes in.
Pay special attention to the big boss fights with the ghosts, which appear to have multiple back-and-forth phases. You can target weak points and change the pace of battle, which is definitely the biggest attraction of the game.
Speaking of exploration, much of the world of Atlas’ fallen ruins is begging to rise from the sand that covers it. You’ll find all sorts of things like chests and upgrade materials, but there’s even more hidden beneath the sand, adding an interesting twist.
Atlas Fallen is a game we’ve been following since last year’s gamescom, where Dom took a demo to sell him the concept. We just played it last March, and Alex was intrigued by the game’s Darksiders and Legend of Zelda influences, with a bit of Soul Fight.
Atlas Fallen supports two players in and out of co-op and will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 10.
