More than a year after its release Baldur's Gate 3 continues to be the talk of the town, especially thanks to Honor Mode, which debuted with Update 5 in November 2023. This mode is reserved for the most determined players and offers an even higher level of difficulty than Tactician mode. Just one save, no room for mistakes, and one ultimate reward: golden dice and respect from other adventurers. But being successful in this mode is not for everyone. Far from it.
A mode that is reserved for an elite in Baldur's Gate 3
Only since its introduction 2.1% of Baldur's Gate 3 Steam players have received the Foehammer achievement, proving that they completed the game in Honor Mode. For comparison: 22.8% of players I just completed the game, and only 5% braved tactician mode. These numbers show how enormous this challenge is.
And there are many failures. Very numerous. In a year more than 1.2 million attempts have failed. However, this does not stop the community from working hard to overcome this ultimate challenge. Honor mode doesn't forgive mistakes. And the players have memories of it that are sometimes hilarious, but often frustrating. The forums are full of incredible stories where a simple clumsiness has ruined dozens of hours of gameplay.
A famous example tells the story of a player who defeated the Absolute and ended the game…or almost. During the epilogue, he decides to become a mind flayer to see an alternate ending. Bad idea. A failed dice roll resulted in him devouring his companions' brains, instantly destroying his entire course.
A complicated game
In another case, a player brought his team back to life after a difficult battle. But while he was transporting Gale's body to the camp, his Netherese Orb activated, wiping out the entire group instantly. Despite its extreme difficulty, Honor Mode is attractive. It's a unique challenge that tests not only players' skills, but also their ability to stay focused and plan their every action. It also offers unexpected moments where the unpredictability of the game becomes a real supporting character.
It is also a way to enjoy an even more immersive gaming experience. There is no turning back, every decision counts. To be successful in this mode, you must join an elite group. And that explains why so many players persist despite failure.
