Larian Studios won’t be making the next Baldur’s Gate, but the third game’s narrative director doesn’t care what it’s like, as long as it’s not made just for profit.
Look, we all know that sequels and follow-ups to established IPs are really just money-making tools for rights holders, executives, and the like. And judging by how well Baldur’s Gate 3 has performed since its 1.0 release last year, it’s entirely certain that someone will make a sequel. As stated earlier this year, that company won’t be Larian, even if the studio was once involved in the project. Wizards of the Coast is currently looking for potential partners for future Baldur’s Gate, but nothing has been confirmed yet, so you’ll have to wait a while. But in a recent interview with GamesRadar, narrative director Adam Smith shared his thoughts on a potential sequel.

Smith explained that he doesn’t really care what the sequel will be like, and that the most important thing to him is that whoever makes the sequel does it out of passion, not purely financial reasons. “I’m not trying to be harsh when I say that,” he said. “I want someone to do it because they want to, not because someone says, ‘This is going to affect our earnings next quarter.'”
He further explained why Baldur’s Gate 4 shouldn’t be made by people who think “there needs to be an extra bonus next year,” saying that “it has to come from a desire to make it.” If a developer wanted to make a hypothetical sequel, it should be because “they had an idea, and they said, ‘This is a story that I can tell with these characters in this world.'” Smith also expressed hope that the sequel would be “really good.”
Earlier this week, Larian made a major move, opening a new studio in Warsaw to begin development on “two very ambitious role-playing games.”
