There was quite a surprise at yesterday’s State of Play with the announcement that Baldur’s Gate III will also be coming to the PS5. Xbox owners are a bit panicked about this, but Larian waves it off.
There’s the thing … Larian Studios announced that Baldur’s Gate III finally has a concrete date after a long time in Early Access, namely August 31, 2023. But the surprise was much greater that the Belgian developers now also released the title have announced for the PS5 in addition to the well-known PC version. Naturally, that raises a number of questions in the Xbox camp.
Above all, of course, the question of whether the game will be console-exclusive only for the PS5. But this panic seems unjustified. There is now a statement that Baldur’s Gate III will initially be released for PC, MAC, PS5 and on the cloud gaming service GeForce NOW on August 31st. Larian plans to announce other platforms when the time is right.
Larian boss Swen Vincke was also quick to calm the nervous Xbox community on Twitter. Specifically, it says: “Relax. We still aren’t playing the exclusivity game”. Or in plain English: “Relax, we’re not talking about exclusivity”.
So the chances are not bad that the Xbox Series X/S will also get a version of the highly anticipated role-playing game and there is still a chance that an Xbox version could actually be released on August 31st. In addition, it is not uncommon for no or not all other platforms to be named at Playstation events. The only unusual thing about it is that Larian didn’t mention an Xbox in its own press release.
So all that’s left to do is wait, have tea (or whatever) and hope for the best. In any case, there is apparently no exclusive deal with Sony, or if there is, it will be limited in time in the worst case.
