As is usually the case when a new Batman is cast, Dark Knight fans had to wait until he was on screen to appreciate Ben Affleck in vigilante gear. When he first appeared in Batman V Superman, he embodied a dark and violent version of the character whose arsenal seemed far more deadly than usual. And if the film was not unanimous upon its release, the character managed to win over many fans.
Unfortunately, with the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios, many things will change in the DC Universe. When we found out a few weeks ago that Henry Cavill had to hang up Superman’s cloak, the entire Justice League actually needs to be redesigned. While Ben Affleck’s Batman may seem like ancient history, the man behind the mask may not be.
Batman to Superman?
Taking to Twitter, James Gunn revealed a little more about the future of the DC Universe and the future of Superman in particular. Although we knew he wouldn’t be played by Henry Cavill again, the DC Studios boss mostly told us about his own role since he will be writing. At the same time, James Gunn also revealed that it would not be an origin story, in addition to dropping a small bomb:
When asked by a user if Ben Affleck could be directing the next Superman movie, James Gunn revealed he’s spoken to him about it. Then he tells us that Ben Affleck wants to do a movie and that the two new heads of DC Studios want that too, but that it remains to find the right project for him.
In other words, while it’s not entirely certain that Ben Affleck will direct the new Superman movie, everything seems to indicate that he will have his place as a director in the new DC Universe. Something that makes some fans very curious and others very disappointed not to be able to see him in the Dark Knight costume again…
