The goal is ambitious: EA and DICE want to keep Battlefield 2042 “free from harassment and cheating”. Design Director Daniel Berlin explained this in a question round bei Epic Games:
“With regard to anti-cheat, it’s important to us to say that it is extremely important to us that our players have gaming sessions that are harassment-free and cheating-free.”
However, the formulation leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Strictly speaking, the goal would also be achieved if at least some games were played without cheaters. On the other hand, it would be ideal if most of the games were safe and fair.
In order to achieve the goals it has set itself, Berlin refers to the EA guidelines “Positive Play”. It sets out rules of conduct that are intended to ensure pleasant and fair cooperation.
What does positive play mean?
The Commandments in EA’s “Positive Play Charter” include the following aspects:
- No toxic behavior: This includes harmful behavior such as attacks on race, sexual orientation, gender identity / expression, religion, heritage, country of origin et cetera or unwanted sexual advances and messages.
- Fairness: Players should not cheat or gain an unfair advantage.
- Clean content: Players should only share appropriate content.
- Follow local laws: Players should not engage in any illegal activity in the game. This includes insult, defamation, harassment and threat.

How might anti-cheat work in Battlefield 2042?
Details of the specific measures against fraudsters in Battlefield 2042 were not given. The developers are holding back on this so as not to play into the hands of cheat developers. However, we know that DICE relies on a mix of in-game and server technology such as Fairfight in its predecessor, Battlefield 5, to stop cheaters.
The developers also need help from the community. In other words, in-game reporting tools are available to make it easier to d isplay suspicious players. This is an important cornerstone in identifying the cheaters and removing them from the game.
While Battlefield 5 had some cheating complaints, the situation didn’t seem to be as extreme as that of competitor CoD Warzone. The fact that Battlefield 5 is not a Free2Play title, which traditionally is more affected by cheaters, plays a very likely role here.
A Free2Play example from EA would be Apex Legends, which also uses a whole range of anti-cheat techniques, including the popular Easy AntiCheat tool. It is conceivable that the program will also be used in Battlefield 2042.
