Game news Battlefield 2042: the most important FPS at the end of the year?
Load up your weapons and put on your Kevlar vest, because Battlefield 2042 will soon land on our machines. After leaks, previews and a beta, we were finally able to get our hands on the final version at an event organized by EA. So, finally back to modern warfare, is 2042 one of the best episodes of the license?
To be clear: 2042 is a series that wants to put the small dishes in the big ones. There is a lot to do in terms of content. Remember that this episode is divided into three different multiplayer sections: All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and Portal.
3 pans many different
All-Out Warfare is the traditional multiple license. The players compete on 7 new maps in 2 game modes: breakthrough and conquest. Both are based on point control, except that the former moves attackers forward on the map as the game progresses, while the latter prompts the player to fight for neutral areas. The big novelty of this opus is that 128 players compete against each other at the same time (at least on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series). This gigantic number of players breathes new life into the battles that take place on huge maps. If we haven’t had the time to watch all the rough edges of all the cards, we can easily say that these cards are very successful. Perfectly coordin ated with these two modes, each map gives so-called locations and disputed war zones a place of honor. And if it’s not always obvious that the games are now playing with 128 players, it’s because they’re spread over a very large area. In fact, that larger number of players doesn’t renew the formula, but the larger scale undeniably makes the battlefield more epic and immersive. Watching the battlefield in the distance is particularly impressive because you can see the disparity between the events taking place there.
We must not forget that real meteorological disasters disrupt the fighting. In roughly every second game, depending on the map, a tornado or sandstorm hits the battlefield. These can literally send a team to control a point waltz and return a game. We are already stuck at the entrance to the last point to be conquered because a tornado blocked the passage. So yes, it’s annoying, but it creates variations in the rhythms and periodically refreshes the experience.
No BR, but squad play
Hazard Zone, the second multiplayer break, reduces the extent of the fighting and places 8 squads of 4 players on scaled-down variations of the All-Out Warfare maps. In this mode, it is necessary to restore hard drives on crushed satellites. To find them, squads must use scanners that can detect these hard drives, even if they are in enemy pockets. This is a great way to effectively hunt down other teams. To win the game, a squad must flee in a helicopter that only lands twice per game. We didn’t expect much from this mode, and yet it turns out to be the most competitive of the episode and is downright exhilarating. It’s not battle royale, but it emphasizes teamwork and challenges players to put their roster together intelligently. This is where the operators of 2042 come into play. A medic, a soldier equipped with a drone, radar, or tower changes a team’s strategy. Before entering the battlefield, anyone can spend one in-game currency to equip themselves. But be careful, in the event of death you will lose all of your equipment! So you’ll have to go back to the cash register to get your favorite gun on board. However, if you win, you will be refunded, unlock an additional equipment slot and earn discounts in the shop. This economic system is honestly well thought out and forces the players to play carefully, the weapons are expensive, you don’t really want to have spent all these credits for free. Those willing to take up the challenge will find it punishment, but frankly intoxicating and very quick. The player never feels bored because there is no need to wait more than a few minutes after the game has started before the first clashes occur. Both extraction sequences build the suspense at breakneck speed, while AI-controlled enemies on the map and hard drive detectors keep the action going throughout the game. It’s also possible to collect delivery packages to redeploy a fallen ally or have a robot dog delivered with a machine gun that will wreak havoc on the battlefields. Overall, this mode offers a lot of strategic options and we were very pleasantly surprised.
Portal, LA killer function
Portal mode is probably the star of this opus for many. Using an intuitive editor, it is possible to create and share your own game modes. In addition, players can draw on the entire content of 2042 as well as a selection of maps, weapons and vehicles from BF 3, 1942 and Bad Company2. Players can combine everything however they want and even create their own rules. For example, we were able to play an individual mode where all players were equipped with rocket launchers and the only way to reload was to jump 5 times in a row. You can imagine an infinite number of modes or simply recreate classics like Instagib or a tank mode. Almost anything is possible. And while everything didn’t seem perfect during our session, for example respawns seemed rough in self-care, we can’t wait to see what gamers will do with this tool that promises gigantic content to gamers of 2042 because it is It’s possible to create crazy experiences, it’s also possible to create more competitive ones. Keep in mind that at launch there will be modes created by the developers, some of which have been modified to reproduce the battles of BF 3, 1942, and Bad Company 2 as faithfully as possible.
Technically, DICE and Battlefield stay true to each other: 2042 is a very nice game. If we can determine coarser details or less fine textures in places, it is difficult not to be seduced by the particularly successful look of this episode. And if it is very nice in normal times, 2042 will only really be noticeable when the light or climatic conditions intensify. Tornadoes cause blood to clot, while sandstorms and downpours are larger than life. The lighting effects are sublime and the smoke is very successful. It’s hard to be picky when the rendering is of this quality.
The heart of the gameplay is evolving smoothly, especially thanks to the operators who offer grappling hooks and other wingsuits, but mostly thanks to some super-enjoyable convenience options. It is now possible at any time to have vehicles delivered and to change accessories during operation. We can therefore change the viewfinder in real time to adapt to all situations. We therefore feel that we are in constant control and that we have real pleasure in all of our chances in every situation.
In short, Battlefield 2042 does everything that is expected of it and more. This opus is not content to be completely successful in its traditional multi-pan, but has the luxury of offering players additional gigantic and high quality content. Portal mode seems ready to keep all of its promises and allow different modes to be created, whether delusional or competitive. Hazard Zone succeeds where you did not expect it and offers a particularly successful reading of the game in the squadron. Beautiful as a truck, generous, and a hell of a lot of fun to play, 2042 is none other than one of the best games in the license. For all of these reasons, we’re giving it a score of 18/20.
