Writing about Star Wars: Battlefront is always awkward. Because it is always necessary to make it clear which battlefront is actually meant. After all, there’s the new Battlefront and Battlefront 2 and the old Battlefront and Battlefront 2.
However, the old two parts in particular are particularly well remembered by many fans and if you count yourself among them, then a new mod could be exciting for you. Star Wars: Sagas is a total conversion for the critically acclaimed hardcore shooter Insurgency: Sandstorm. In the words of the development team:
Everything that exists in Insurgency: Sandstorm, aside from the gameplay, is transformed into Star Wars
.
Star Wars as a tactical shooter
Since Insurgency was conceived as a challenging tactical shooter, Star Wars: Sagas carries some of this DNA with it. So this game isn’t quite as loosely fluffy as you might be used to from the newer Battlefront parts. Nevertheless, fans of the first two Battlefronts will feel quite comfortable here.
Because the team uses the well-known maps from exactly these shooters as the basis for its maps in most cases. So you can shoot your way through the same alleys on Tatooine as in 2005 and marvel at the well-known snowy ruins on Rhen Var. However, the cards are not completely identical to the templates.
The team partially merged maps from the same planets. Rhen Var is a good example here, of which the citadel and harbor were original. In Star Wars: Sagas, both maps belong to the same environment.
Not a remake of Battlefront
In general, don’t expect Insurgency: Sandstorm to be anything like a remake of the first two Battlefront parts with this mod. The gameplay of Insurgency is preserved and there should even be the possibility to modify classes including armor and weapons. But big space battles, as they used to be in Battlefront 2, will most likely not be here. You can see how the gameplay currently looks in motion in this video:

In general, the mod is still in a fairly early stage of development. So far only the clone war is playable, even if the fight of the rebels against the empire is to follow in any case and also the resistance against the first order or the time of the old republic are planned. Vehicles and many features or gadgets also have to be completely installed.
Even the PvP is far from finished, but you can easily mess with a few droids in single player or co-op. Only the tactical component of Insurgency will bring less traction here.
If you want to get a taste of Star Wars: Sagas now, you can find the mod on moddb or at mod.io. In both cases you need a full version of Insurgency, of course. You can find out in the test whether the shooter is worthwhile without a blaster:
