Platinum Games has received new investment from Chinese publisher Tencent.
Of course, Tencent is this Chinese conglomerate that already has a considerable stake in many video game developers worldwide, not to mention the studios it fully owns.
Platinum games, Bayonetta's developer and the upcoming Babylon's Fall announced today that Tencent has invested in the company.
The developer emphasized that this is not a complete acquisition and will not have an impact on Platinum's ongoing operations or corporate structure. The real reason Platinum may seek this investment is to further safeguard the studio's independence, and more specifically, to empower it to potentially publish its work on its own.
"We want to use this funding to strengthen our business foundation and expand from game development to exploring self-distribution," the statement wrote.
"We also hope that this partnership will give us a broader global perspective while still creating high-quality games that fit our name."
This is big news for Platinum, which often relies on third-party publishers to fund its various projects. Sometimes this causes studios to produce less great games on tight budgets just to make ends meet.
