Beat Apple and Intel? The new laptop CPUs from AMD are said to be clearly ahead in one discipline

Ahead, AMD, Apple, beat, CPUs, discipline, Intel, Laptop

AMD seems to be in a real processor frenzy at CES 2023. Not only has the manufacturer presented six new desktop processors. A whole range of new laptop CPUs will soon be found inside notebooks.

All newly introduced mobile CPUs bear the title Ryzen 7000 – but the devil is in the details. Because not every model presented is based on the new Zen 4 technology. In some cases, significantly older architectures are used, especially in the lower price segment.

Ryzen 7000X3D: AMD wants to beat Intel with these gaming CPUs

The fact that the models should all belong to the same generation results from AMD’s new naming scheme for its mobile CPUs. The concept presented in September is briefly summarized as follows:

Serie Codename Suffix Zen architecture iGPU
Ryzen 7X45 Dragon Range HX Zen 4 RDNA2
Ryzen 7X40 Phoenix HS/U Zen 4 RDNA3
Ryzen 7X35 Rembrandt-R HS/U Zen 3+ RDNA2
Ryzen 7X30 Barcelo-R U Zen 3 Vega
Ryzen 7X25 Mendocino U Zen 2 RDNA2

The graphics presented during the showcase show where the various models fit in terms of performance and for which applications AMD has planned the various series.

A special feature that sets the top series Dragon Range apart from the other models is the chiplet design. Like the latest desktop CPUs, Dragon Range no longer relies on a single, monolithic chip, but on two parallel chiplets.

In addition, the top model of the Ryzen 7X45 CPUs, the Ryzen 9 7945HX, should have a total of 16 cores – with eight cores on each chiplet.

AMD also talks about the performance of the new notebook flagship in two benchmarks. The Ryzen 9 7945HX is compared with the previous top model Ryzen 9 6900HX. The new processor is clearly at the forefront, working up to 18 percent faster and being able to access up to 78 percent more power in multitasking and productivity applications.

On the other hand, AMD talks about the gaming performance of the two high-end processors. The newly introduced 7945HX is said to offer up to 29 percent more FPS in Far Cry 6, and this value even increases to 62 percent in League of Legends.

Another innovation of the mobile Ryzen 7000 CPUs with the code name Phoenix seems dr To particularly inspire Lisa Su during the performance. The technology is called AMD Ryzen AI. This is AMD’s new AI accelerator, which should enable up to four simultaneous AI streams.

According to AMD, this is not just about the world’s first integrated AI engine on an x86 processor. The engine, which is manufactured using the 4-nanometer process, is also said to be 30 percent faster than Apple’s Neural Engine and 45 percent faster than the Intel counterpart that is expected to make its debut with Meteor Lake.

The first notebooks in which the new AMD processors are installed are scheduled to appear in February 2023. AMD names three specific models during the presentation, all of which rely on the new flagship Ryzen 9 7945HX:

  • Alienware m16 and m18
  • Asus Strix
  • Lenovo Legion

However, none of the notebooks shown will be cheap at the start, that’s for sure. You can find cheaper alternatives in our large purchase guide.
