Not all video games have been blessed with a name as brutal and sonorous as Helldivers. Those of us who have played have recorded the voice of the narrator of the introduction saying “Join the Helldivers” or “Join the Helldivers”. We’ve been repeating that name like crazy for the past few months.
But where the hell does it come from? Helldivers? If we use Google Translate, the crudest translation is “Hell Divers.” While it captures the original essence, it is not entirely accurate with the idea that Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt shared in a interview for PlayStation Official.
“Helldivers” was an idea based on the phrases “war is hell” and “plunge into war.” That’s how Helldivers became. Additionally, we wanted a name that reflected the activity you would do in the game.
Anyone with a translator on hand and a little common sense can undo the creative path of the name. However, Pilestedt admitted that he had the name in mind even before raising the concepts with the team. Its authentic origin dates back to the Second World War, specifically to the bomber called Curtiss SB2C Helldiver.
He Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was a dive bomber-style aircraft that served during World War II. It was produced by the United States (and Canadian) Navy and served as a replacement for the Douglas SBD Dauntless. It has a lot of variants. So now you know: Helldivers 2 owes its name not only to the concept of plunging into war, but to an iconic bomber decommissioned in 1959, although production ceased in 1945.
In iGamesNews | I have abandoned my position in Helldivers 2 to travel to the past and fulfill the wish of many players: defend SuperEarth from the Automata
In iGamesNews | I’ve explored the origins of Helldivers 2 for a few hours and now I understand where this democratic wonder came from
In iGamesNews | I would never touch the friendly fire of Helldivers 2, but I think this forgotten zombie video game could make it a lot better
