i never played last survivor. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do so, and as a self-proclaimed horror fan, it feels blasphemous for me not to have checked out a game. However, I had commitment issues and concentration issues, and despite my roommate’s endless attempts to convince me to sit down and play, I kept avoiding the game.
HBO’s The Last of Us has aired, and like most others who haven’t played the game, I immediately can’t wait to find out what’s going on with the story that has so many fans raving about it. Needless to say, after watching the first episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, I was teary and emotional — but most of all, hungry for more.
But what was it that I longed for more? The show itself, of course. However, if there was one first episode that was so enjoyable for me, it was Bella Ramsay. Frankly, all I can think of right now is, “Are you fucking my mom or what?”
Look, we all know Pedro Pascal will surprise us. You only need to review Game of Thrones or The Mandalorian to know. However, Bella Ramsay is an actor I’ve never actually seen on screen before (yes, that means I’ve never actually seen Game of Thrones either. I tried, but no matter). Bella Ramsay played the iconic Ellie, and while I can’t directly compare their performances to the game, I can say it’s a character I root for.
Ellie is brave and resourceful. She can break codes, defend herself, and crack jokes when necessary. Despite the serious outbreak at hand, Allie provides comic relief in the first episode — without compromising the importance or seriousness of her character. Beneath her hostile but courageous demeanor is a terrified young girl; we get glimpses of this side of her now and then, but in general Ellie’s character always restrains her fears and remains brave. At times, she’s bold; it’s a character who knows how to survive. Ramsay captures it all with aplomb.
It’s certainly a testament to Ellie’s character, and yes, this episode stirred something inside of me that might end up seeing me play the game. I know where HBO’s The Last of Us is going because I couldn’t ignore the plot points detailed on social media over the years, and I’m excited to see how Joel and Ellie’s relationship develops.
Mainly because of the performances of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, though, I love the characters and the way I was hooked from the start. Something as simple as their facial expression, their long exhalation, or even the way they sit can tell you a lot about the mood of that particular scene. Considering the stellar editing and editing, combined with these exceptional actors, HBO’s “The Last of Us” makes for the creepiest ride yet — even for its nine-episode 79 minutes.
Although you may think you know what’s coming next, you’re never quite prepared. On that note, I don’t think I was at all prepared for how this show would destroy me emotionally, but I know I’d be more than happy to see Bella Ramsay get the positive attention they deserve for a powerful performance.
