Mass Effect fans haven’t had it easy in recent years. Between a more than controversial latest installment and a new one we’re still waiting for news of, there’s reason for discouragement. Unfortunately, it’s not yet time to draw hope again…

Mass Effect Andromeda, an episode that some would prefer to forget

If the license is a bit too discreet today, it’s good to remind the youngest players Mass Effect is one of those games that literally revolutionized the video game landscape. Even though the first episode from 2007 is getting on in years due to its somewhat difficult mechanics, the other two (released in 2010 and 2012 respectively) are quite playable today and have lost none of their great qualities. All three came out in a Legendary Edition in 2021, which you can easily find for a cheaper price if you want to keep up.

But while fans were treated to a near-perfect trilogy (each installment was also rated 18/20 in our columns), the latest work failed to win over audiences quite as much. Mass Effect Andromeda, released in 2017, while embracing the same rich and developed universe as the original trilogy, showed less mastery in its narrative and gameplay. While some gamers will argue heart and soul that it’s not that bad (and they’d probably be right), it’s clear that the game only managed a score of 72 on Metacritic, compared to an average of 90 over the first three episodes. In other words, when Bioware announced it was working on a new episode, fans of the saga were excited that it could continue.

The next Mass Effect probably won’t come out any time soon

It took three years after the release of Mass Effect Andromeda for Bioware to confirm that work had started on the next installment in the sci-fi saga. In fact, in December 2020 we first learned of the existence of this famous fifth work without knowing much more. Aside from the concept art (which serves as a thumbnail for this article) and a teaser posted on the official Mass Effect Twitter, the studio behind the game hasn’t been very forthcoming about the development of the final game since then.

However, we now know a little more about the development status of the supposed Mass Effect 5. In blog entry Regarding the studio change currently working on the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware’s general manager has actually revealed some details about the future Mass Effect and also said that the news is not good.

At Mass Effect, we continue pre-production with a team of experienced writers driving the franchise’s rich story in spectacular fashion.

If his message is to be reassuring about the quality of the game that Bioware is preparing, Gary McKay therefore reveals with this message that the next Mass Effect is still not beyond the pre-production phase, despite the project start, which is at least in December 2020. So we’ll have to be patient to learn more about the details of this new episode, not to mention being able to take it into our own hands. Thankfully, Bioware doesn’t plan on leaving its fans empty-handed, as more is set to be revealed about the next Dragon Age: Dreadwolf soon. There is currently no exact release date for the fourth part of the fantasy saga.
