In the opinion of Bethesda design director Emil Pagliarulo, “Starfield” is in many ways one of the best works the studio has ever produced, although he admits that “it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.”
Yes, with the much-hyped Shattered DLC now out, everyone has a chance to head to the Va’ruun’kai and take on arguably the most interesting (in theory) faction in the game – Pagliarulo in an interview with GamesRadar spoke about Bethesda’s hit Space Babies and how he views its status as an IP and part of what the studio has accomplished.

The developer made a joke while making the game to let him know that The Elder Scrolls 6 was a game that people really enjoyed, saying: “I think in a lot of ways, Starfield is what Bethesda has done. The hardest thing.
“We pushed ourselves to make something completely different. To cram the biggest, richest space simulation RPG anyone could imagine into Xbox. Our success made Starfield a technological marvel. From a lot of It’s also the best game we’ve ever made, but the most important thing for us is that Starfield has its own unique identity and it’s right next to Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.”
“It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but what is?” Pagliarulo added, “We’ve created a new IP from the ground up, and an absolutely unique experience on consoles. I’m not saying Starfield is better or better than anything else. Other games are worse – it’s just that what we offer is different, which is Bethesda’s weird blend of immersion, action and role-playing… but it’s also different. [to] Other RPGs from Bethesda. “
While it’s nice to see developers and studios taking risks and trying new things, rather than often playing it safe and taking what has historically been developed, the question is whether Starfield has really nailed the landing spot well enough to sit there. . Juxtaposed with Bethesda’s two major series, if you ask a roomful of people, you’ll get a lot of different answers. At least one person will probably also ask you what the hell you’re talking about, assuming that room is at a party you’ve invited your real friends to.
My point may be similar to our Starfield review last year, which I thought did a good job of breaking down why it earned the reputation of being “not a bad game” in the eyes of many, but also one that wasn’t. Not up to the level of its masterpiece.
