The word has been out on everyone’s lips, and now it’s official: The 20th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Good & Evil is ready to go!
In recent days, the signs of an impending announcement had been increasing, and now Ubisoft has made a statement: The original Beyond Good & Evil is getting a new edition in the form of a 4K remaster for current platforms and will be released shortly. The new edition is called Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition and was presented during a Limited Run Games Showcase.
The updated version will be released next week on June 25, 2024. Then you can get the remaster of the classic game for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch platforms.
What’s different compared to the original game? First and foremost, you can expect updated graphics with up to 4K resolution and 60 fps, according to Ubisoft. There are also a whole host of other quality-of-life improvements, including an auto-save function, the ability to skip cutscenes, controllers, mouse-keyboard support, and cross-save across all supported platforms.
There will also be new features, including a new speedrun mode. Ubisoft has also recently added over 20 new achievements and trophies to the cult game that you can get your hands on, and a gallery contains previously unpublished artwork and videos with more in-depth impressions.
The release of an updated version of the classic game, which was originally released in 2003 on GameCube, PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2, had been on the cards for some time. Last autumn, an unfinished version of the remaster was even leaked online.
In Beyond Good & Evil, which is set more than 400 years in the future, you follow the story of photojournalist Jade, who wants to uncover an alien conspiracy. Commercially, the title was a bit of a flop at the time, but Beyond Good & Evil nevertheless became a real cult classic. This was one of the reasons why Ubisoft announced a sequel in 2017 with Beyond Good & Evil 2, which unfortunately was repeatedly delayed. Although the last official announcement about this sequel was in 2021, the project is said to still be in the works.
Until the release of Beyond Good & Evil 2 (which is probably even further away), you can now pass the time on new platforms with the updated first part thanks to Limited Run Games. Side note: In addition to the digital release on June 25th, there will also be a physical version of the game, although this will not be available until July 12th.
