Google is rolling out the March update for Pixel phones, Pixel Tablet and Pixel Watch. The latter in particular receives numerous new functions as a result of the update.
Google is now rolling out a new update for the Pixel smartphones starting with the Pixel 5, the first generation Pixel Watch and the Pixel Tablet. The so-called feature drop in March brings numerous new functions to the devices.
New features for Pixel smartphones
The “Circle to Search” feature is also being expanded to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro with the update. The function was previously only available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models as well as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
With “Circle to Search” it is possible to mark images, text or videos by long pressing the button in the middle or the navigation bar and thus obtain information about the search without having to switch between apps. Furthermore, recorded 10-bit HDR videos can now be shared as Instagram Reels and Ultra HDR photos in the Instagram feed.
Many innovations for the first generation Pixel Watch
With the feature drop, the Pixel Watch receives many of the functions of the Pixel Watch 2 – these include:
- Set a pace goal: Anyone who is training for a race or has simply set a pace goal can now set the pace goal on the Pixel Watch 1. Using the built-in GPS and motion sensors, you can find out when your destination has been reached. As soon as you leave your speed target, haptic notifications appear on the watch as well as verbal notifications if you pair your watch with headphones such as the Pixel Buds Pro.
- Heart rate zone training: If you have specific heart rate zones to target, you can use this feature to check the time you spend in each heart rate. You can set personal goals and receive haptic notifications if you change heart rate zones.
- New user interface: Larger text and brighter colors give the first generation Pixel Watch a new look.
- Auto start and auto stop: With this feature you no longer have to start or stop your workout manually. Your Pixel Watch automatically starts and ends your workout when it detects the activity. No matter whether running, walking, elliptical training, spinning, outdoor bike, Lauand8 and rowing.
- Fitbit Relax App: The Fitbit Relax app can now also be used on the first generation Pixel Watch. After training, the app can, for example, guide you through breathing exercises directly from your wrist to calm your body and mind.
- Google Maps on Wear OS: Using Google Maps, you can now display public transportation routes on your Pixel Watch. Various means of transport, real-time departure times and a compass-enabled map view help you reach your destination.
New features for the Pixel Tablet
The Pixel Tablet also receives new functions with the update. For example, if you don’t want to share the entire screen during a video call, you now have the option of only sharing the screen of an app you are using. According to Google, the feature is also available on the Pixel Fold.
Devices previously used with your account can now be quickly paired via the Connected Devices settings page. For example, previously set up Bluetooth accessories can be connected to a new smartphone or tablet.
The Pixel tablets’ digital keyboard is replaced by a Gboard language toolbar. By using voice input, the keyboard is minimized into a toolbar and is intended to create more space on the screen and make multitasking easier.
