Bikini Bottom needs saving again, but the first trailer for the Sandy Cheeks movie shows SpongeBob isn’t the hero this time

A new CG, live-action hybrid SpongeBob SquarePants movie is coming to theaters, but this time, everyone’s favorite Southern squirrel will take the starring role.

It’s been nearly a decade since 2015’s SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water combined animation with live-action, but Netflix’s upcoming Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is about to change all that. As you can probably tell from the title, the movie isn’t really about SpongeBob, but he’ll still be starring alongside the film’s title character as he continues his usual mischief. The first trailer for the new film was released yesterday, and while Bikini Bottom has gotten into trouble many times before, this time the entire town is being pulled from the ocean and shipped off to Texas (which happens to be Sandy’s hometown).

As Sandy makes her way onto land, a new reveal is made about the character: she’s actually a flying squirrel! This has never been revealed before, especially considering Sandy has previously taken off her flight suit, which could probably only be explained as “because she wasn’t a flying squirrel until now,” but hey, I guess sometimes you just have to figure out a way to get a rodent and anthropomorphic sponge across America. The film also introduces Sandy’s extended family, introducing a host of new cast members including Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), Craig Robinson (Pineapple Express), and Grey Griffin (Avatar: The Last Airbender).

You won’t have to wait too long to see this new movie either, as it’s set to hit theaters in just a few weeks on August 2. This is the first SpongeBob movie that’s scheduled to be released only digitally, as it will only be available through Netflix, so I apologize to anyone who was hoping to hold Inside Out 2 back from being a box office success.
