At the Game Awards 2020, the next Mass Effect was announced after a long wait. And although the anticipation is great, it also brings with it concerns. After all, the developer Bioware had to struggle with problems recently.
However, under the names of some of the employees, the Director Michael Gamble posted on Twitter, there are now some veterans who have worked on successful parts of the series.
The developer’s recent past
Why are there concerns about Mass Effect? The last work by Bioware was Anthem, which did not get good ratings at the time. In our test, we only gave the game 67 points. Meanwhile, a small team of 30 developers went back to the drawing board and reinvented the game as Anthem 2.0, with the aim of saving it.
The last Mass Effect was released more than three years ago. Andromeda was also criticized for its publication. According to developer Mark Darah himself, it was a “very buggy game” at launch.
As a result, the favor with the players who rated it poorly on Metacritic fell. The press reviews were also mixed and were enough for average of 72 points.
Why could Mass Effect get better in 2022?
In his column, our editor Fabiano Uslenghi already stated that despite all this, he is in a good mood. He knows that Bioware is no longer the same studio as it used to be, but the announcement of the new sci-fi adventure still gives him hope.

Additional hope could come from the fact that the development of Mass Effect (2022) numerous veterans of the series are involved:
- Derek Watts: The original art director of the Mass Effect franchise.
- Brenon Holmes: A veteran at Bioware who already worked on Baldur’s Gate 2 and on every single part of Mass Effect. He was mainly responsible for the gameplay.
- Parish Ley: Cinematic Director of the original trilogy. Was responsible for the fan-favorite moments of the series, according to Gamble. Left Bioware in the past but is coming back for the ME range.
- Dusty Everman: It was essential to bring the Normandy vision to life. Everman is another returnees who once left Bioware in 2015.
Well-known names don’t make a good game, of course. And such a development studio is much larger than just a handful of renowned developers. Hundreds of people work on projects like Mass Effect. Nevertheless, it could set an example if the same people are working on a title who have already proven themselves in the past.
