What ferments for a long time finally becomes blood… at least that seems to be the case for the Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Almost a decade after funding, the developers are finally implementing multiplayer mode. However, somehow different than expected.
Former Castlevania developer Koji Igarashi wanted to get a measly $500,000 from fans to develop a new Castlevania without the appropriate license. In doing so, he seemed to be hitting an open door, as the target was literally pulverized with $5.5 million. However, this also resulted in over 20 stretch goals, promises that the developer makes if a certain amount of money is raised that goes beyond the actual goal.
Apart from a canceled PS Vita port (which hardly anyone is likely to mourn), all promises have now been kept, except for the asynchronous multiplayer mode. In the style of Dark Souls and colleagues, you could then leave messages to other players in the world or perhaps even summon their spirits as (NPC) helpers.
However, the reality now looks a little different. 5 years after release, Bloodstained does get multiplayer, but in the form of two modes that no longer have much to do with the original promise.
In chaos mode, you fight alone or together through randomly generated rooms and weave your way through the enemies rolling in.
The Versus mode also promises a lot of action. You defeat monsters to collect souls, which you can either use to make life difficult for your opponent or to buy new abilities for yourself.
