Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock is the second major story DLC for Borderlands 3. And this time it is really going down. Even for Borderlands standards …
The first download expansion for Borderlands 3 was well received, but could not set any spectacular accents that would make it memorable in the long term. Can the second DLC do this better? The short version of the answer: yes and no. For the longer version we have to go further.
Engagement with obstacles
The story hanger for Guns, Love, and Tentacles is the upcoming marriage of Sir Alistair Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs and the associated engagement party. This takes place on the exotic planet Xylourgos, which not only at first glance seems to be a very unsuitable place for the planned festivities. We don't want to reveal too much about the story of the DLC at this point. However, the authors deserve a lot of praise for their work: The plot is wonderfully crazy and the gags ignite much better than in the first download extension. Sure, there are a few inglorious exceptions again, but overall, you can expect the best Boderlands entertainment with all its facets.

This is mainly due to the varied and interesting locations. So you end up in the somewhat eerie city called Cursehaven, where her name seems to be the program. In addition, your path leads you into the gloomy Cankerwood and into a huge manor house, which is inhabited by numerous cultists who have dedicated themselves to the shady god Gythian. The latter are also the most interesting opponents in Guns, Love, and Tentacles.
You will encounter a multitude of new creatures, but the cultists stand out from the crowd simply because of the different (inter) actions. For example, they bring fallen comrades back to life or give each other a brief buff. Some of them even like your weapons to eat – in the truest sense of the word.
More of the same?
Apart from the main missions, as usual, a variety of side quests await you, which should extend the playing time. Among them are some quite entertaining missions, but also some that are much more generic and are forgotten just as quickly as you have completed them. On the whole, the DLC has a solid mix, but again it lacks real highlights.
The same applies to the level design. As already mentioned, some of the locations were staged with great themes. However, sometimes the developers try to break out of the usual scheme, which is not always good for the game. For example, there is a boss fight in which you have to jump over floating platforms in a jump-n-run manner. Such passages were annoying rather than entertaining in the main game. The fact that you have to start the fight all over again in the event of a misstep is also nerve-wracking.
Otherwise, Guns, Love, and Tentacles offers everything you could expect from a DLC for Borderlands 3. Of course, this includes some new legendary weapons, but also class mods and other equipment. The developers have even thought of additional cosmetic items such as vehicle skins or room decorations.
