After a long wait, the live-action adaptation of Borderlands has debuted, and yes, it does look like one Borderlands The characters in it.
If this sounds like I’m being sarcastic, I’m mostly being sarcastic since people have already gotten the first look at the upcoming adaptation, but that’s not what it is. Several photos were released, the main one being one of the entire cast looking down into some kind of hole. The cast includes Cate Blanchett as Lilith, a red-haired siren on the run who searches for Atlas’s missing daughter (Ed. Édgar Ramírez) and returns to his planet. Kevin Hart stars as ex-soldier Roland, Ariana Greenblatt stars as Tiny Tina, and Florian Munteanu ) as Tina’s bodyguard Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as scientist Tannis, and Bowser himself, Jack Black, as the rather iconic robot Claptrap.

A second photo of Blanchett as Lilith was also shown, but again, I’m not getting much from these photos right now other than the glare of a smoky eye. Right now it just has an expensive role-playing vibe to it, but I’m sure seeing them in action will make it start to feel like a real movie.
The Borderlands movie began production as early as 2015, with Eli Roth signing on to direct the project in 2020. Blanchett signed soon after, and Black and others joined the following year. How much Roth will ultimately direct for the project is somewhat up in the air, as Deadpool director Tim Miller took over the remake of the film last year — and Roth was unable to return due to scheduling conflicts.
Beyond that, details about the upcoming adaptation are still limited, though it’s been confirmed that the movie’s plot won’t follow that of the game, so expect some differences.
“Borderland” will hit theaters on August 9.
