Netflix has acquired its third game development studio, Boss Fight Entertainment.
Netflix has been gradually building up its in-house creative development team since the company made mobile games available to its members about four months ago.
Its first acquisition was Oxenfree developer Night School Studio, followed by Finnihs studio Next Games.
“Boss Fight’s mission is to bring a simple, beautiful and fun gaming experience to our players, no matter what they want to play,” said the studio’s founders. “Netflix’s commitment to offering ad-free games as part of a membership subscription allows game developers like us to focus on creating delightful gameplay without worrying about monetization.
“We’re excited to be joining Netflix at this early stage as we continue to do what we love while helping shape the future of Netflix gaming together.”
Boss Fight Entertainment was founded in 2013 by David Rippy (CEO), Bill Jackson (CCO) and Scott Winsett (COO). The Texas-based studio is made up of developers of games like Age of Empires, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Halo Wars, as well as free-to-play titles like CastleVille, Dungeon Boss, myVEGAS Bingo, and Kingdom Boss.
Netflix says it’s still in the early stages of building a “great gaming experience” as part of its Netflix membership, and with such acquisitions, it hopes to build a world-class game studio capable of bringing a wide variety of original games, Without the in-app purchases of hundreds of millions of subscribers.
