Neither the new professor Charles Xavier, nor the former mercenary and SHIELD agent known as G. W. Bridge and neither Paladin: the character to whom Giancarlo Esposito will give life in Captain America: Brave New World it will be Sidewinderwas officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 and, as the actor himself hinted weeks ago, no one saw it coming. Which makes sense, mind you: Who is Sidewinder?
Born as Seth Voelker, and known in the comics published in Europe to date as Rattlesnake -in the same way that Deadpool is known on paper as Deadpool- Sidewinder was the leader of The Serpent Society And in addition to wearing an exceptionally striking suit, he has a cape with advanced technology that allows him to teleport along with everything he covers with it. Will we see Esposito’s character in this outfit?
From here on it’s time to open the real can of worms: What is the Serpent Society?Technically, the origin goes through the Serpent Squad, a group of super villains whose common denominator, both in their paraphernalia and in general, is the theme of snakes themselves. Comics before were like that.
In addition to acting on their own, they provided services to recurring Marvel villains and, over time, Sidewinder – or Rattlesnake if you prefer – reformulated and expanded the initiative until forming the society, becoming recurring enemies of Captain America.
The look and what has been shown so far in Captain America: Brave New World We’re led to believe that Marvel Studios’ Sidewinder will be inspired much more by the comic book universe’s counterpoint Ultimate (Earth-1610’s Seth Voelker), being more of an organized group of mercenaries than the classic supervillains with overly flashy costumes. However, we’ll have to wait until Giancarlo Esposito’s character is developed for the big screen.
The curious thing is that the presence of the Snake Society in the UCM it has been a more or less recurring joke. In 2014, ten years ago, Kevin Feige himself, president of Marvel Studios, announced the third film starring Steve Rogers as Captain America: Serpent Society to then take advantage of the confusion and formally announce Civil War along with its protagonists.
Since then, and in a sibylline way, signs have been shown to the very fans: in the stoic scene of Deadpool and Wolverine shown in all the trailers, you can read a luminous sign Copper Heads with a snake. A reference to Marvel’s Serpent Society and, more specifically, Davis Lawfers.
Little by little, Captain America: Brave New World It’s getting more and more interesting: the new Captain America of the MCU will not only have to deal with the heavy burden of being on par with Steve Rogers, but also try not to be overshadowed on screen by a Red Hulk played by Harrison Ford himself. And beware, Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder will not be the only big threat: Tim Blake Nelson will reprise his role as Samuel Sterns and will play the Leader, another powerful Marvel villain introduced no less than 16 years ago and of whom, so far, we have barely seen any footage on screen.
What we do know is that many of these loose ends will be tied up in Captain America: Brave New Worldscheduled to premiere on February 14, 2025. It will be the prelude to both Fantastic Four and Marvel’s next big event: Avengers: Doomsday and the Secret Wars. And beware, it is not at all out of the question that a series for the Serpent Society will be formally announced sooner rather than later.
