The cannelloni are falling out of our mouths: the recently announced Mafia Trilogy is much more than a network of remasters. Mafia 1 gets an official remake called Mafia: Definitive Edition!
The teaser was originally supposed to hint at this until the big reveal on May 19 – but »thanks« to the Microsoft Store, all planned mafia content is already online! Check out these screenshots:

This makes our forecast article on the Mafia teaser completely for the cat, because this leak confirms what fans have been looking for for years: Lost Heaven and Mafia 1 are returning in a contemporary graphic. With new speakers, new game mechanics, new engine. On the shop side it says:
"Re-made from the ground up, rise through the ranks of the Mafia during the Prohibition era of organized crime. After a run-in with the mob, cab driver Tommy Angelo is thrust into a deadly underworld. Initially uneasy about falling in with the Salieri crime family, Tommy soon finds that the rewards are too big to ignore. "
We paraphrase the product page:
- The Mafia remake was completely redeveloped, not simply remastered.
- The original campaign is expanded.
- The original soundtrack remains.
- The gameplay has also been revised.
- The remake is part of a larger collection: Mafia 2 and 3 appear as remastered versions and are merely graphically adapted, not newly developed.
- The game appears on August 28, 2020 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One!
This also makes it clear which secret project the Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13 has been working on for years. Not Mafia 4, but Mafia 1. Our assessment:
Dimitry Halley: I am just discussing with the community like a wooden head that I am skeptical whether the 5-second start of the teaser could really be Mafia 1 because a new speaker, completely new graphics, all of this points to a real remake, no remaster. And I thought that was absolutely unlikely. Judging by how far Mafia 3 has moved from the roots of the series, a remake would have been the last thing I say to Hangar 13. But how lucky I am to be completely wrong (and our readers absolutely right). A real remake is what I have been hoping for as a fan for over 10 years. Because Mafia 1 is one of the best gangster epics and gaming stories ever. However, the developers of the remake also follow in very, very, very, very large footsteps. The original game director Daniel Vavra now works elsewhere. Hangar 13 does not just reissue a masterpiece here, they also do it without a safety net. Mafia 3 has caused a lot of criticism – whether the remake ultimately lives up to its name is far from clear.
