The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (often referred to as BOTW) became a cultural phenomenon when it released in 2017. The Nintendo Switch game is regarded as a masterpiece by long-time Zelda fans, and has attracted a whole new audience as it redefined the open-world genre. Many of the elements that debuted in the original BOTW are now common elements in modern open world games, cementing their impact on the industry.
