Dwarf Fortress fans have been waiting for the Steam version for years. The almost notorious complex construction game has been continuously developed for almost 20 years, represents the life’s work of developer Bay12 and stands out due to its extremely old-fashioned ASCII graphics.
The Steam version starts up right one
Graphics and has been making steady progress since 2019. And although the developers held back with a release date for a long time, they are now launching Steam at the earliest in autumn 2022
Does the game appear incomplete?
Like Bay12 on Steam runs, Fort Mode, the heart of Dwarf Fortress, is nearing completion. Work on the user interface and some graphics as well as bug fixing represent the remaining construction sites, which could already be completed in autumn 2022. Then the game can appear when the players want it.
However, Dwarf Fortress then differs in content from its ASCII template. Because it lacks the adventure and legend modes, which many fans consider an important part of the game. Now the developers have to decide.
Either Dwarf Fortress only appears with the main mode on Steam, and then additional modes are added in free updates. Or the development takes an even longer time that is difficult to calculate.
Bay12 explicitly asks for player feedback to include it in the final decision. So if you plan to play Dwarf Fortress sooner or later, now is the time to make your voice heard.
