Bungie revealed some of Destiny 2’s upcoming plot today, but also made some very vague hints about the future of the series.
Last week, Destiny 2 released its latest expansion, Final Form, and for many, it felt like a grand sendoff for Destiny’s 10-year anniversary. So, in a way, it also felt like the end of Destiny, but Bungie showed off some of the content coming to the game in a new video released earlier today titled “The Journey Ahead.” It was previously announced that there would be three chapters following Final Form, called Echoes, Vengeance, and Heresy, and today a brief look at each of them was given. Echoes is the first of three upcoming chapters in the upcoming 10 years, and follows on from the first Echo that players will encounter, which landed on Nessus.
This echo changes the planet and causes the Vex to behave strangely. In terms of gameplay, this episode introduces a three-player campaign, described as “an arena-style offensive that we’ve never done before.” The second episode, Revenant, will apparently be “very Fallen-themed,” with the video noting that they no longer have a home. This episode is inspired by dark fantasy and is apparently about “killing vampires, with a little splicer mixed in.” You can become a Slayer Baron, a role “reserved for the most famous monster hunters.” Some concept art for armor was also shown, with one set apparently inspired by Bloodborne, but I’m personally here for it.
Revenant will also feature a new system called “potion crafting,” where you can craft things like battle potions that directly enhance your artifacts, or loot potions, “giving you control over the rewards you’re chasing.” In the final episode, “Heresy,” you’ll see the Hive Pantheon “dealing with some new and intriguing revelations.” There 217;s some kind of “new mysterious force” that’s creating new mysteries that will ultimately take you back to the Dreadnaught.

You can watch the full video above for more details on each new chapter, but what’s confusing Destiny fans is the new teaser at the end. Year 11 will feature content codenamed Frontiers, and Bungie says “The Journey Continues” will arrive in 2025.
It’s unclear what exactly this is, as the codename Frontiers is placed right next to the Destiny 2 logo, so it doesn’t appear to be related to the rumored Destiny 3. On the game’s subreddit, one player noted that “Frontiers sounds like we’re leaving the solar system,” which certainly sounds like a good choice, and others echoed that sentiment. Another player commented that what was shown “looks terrible, but simply confirming Year 11 and giving it a codename does little to clarify the future of the series, unless [Destiny 3] “2025.”
One user pointed out that this “makes [Destiny 3] At least now the rumors can be put to rest”, but others have weighed in to believe that a sequel is still in the works. A report earlier this year did claim that Bungie might be working on Destiny 3, but apparently the developer is happy to continue working on Destiny 2 for the time being. Besides, Bungie is already busy, with the Marathon reboot and Matter still in production.
