Dreamcast and rackets is a combination that, for those of us who go through the SEGA console and keep it in our memory with special affection, cannot fail. C-Smash VRS for PSVR2 honors that memory with an arcade as addictive as it is ephemeral.
It may not be the perfect example of the chart ceiling you can reach PS5 in what to virtual reality is concerned, but it is an idea executed well enough to serve as an example of how to make the new controllers stand out above everything else.
From a Dreamcast rarity to virtual reality
Inherited from a game of Dreamcast in which we played a sort of futuristic fronton in the third person, here the jump to virtual reality takes us to the first person to put us inside that squash arena. The objective, in any case, remains the same.
Through several levels that we will be able to play in arcade mode -yes, at home-, or in Zen mode with the possibility of repeating screens, we will have to destroy static and moving targets with bonuses such as a few extra seconds for your marker.
If you manage to complete them all, you jump to the next challenge and are given a score according to how fast or slow you did it, and from there try to stay hooked with relative success trying to beat your marks in a single player option that has the fuse much shorter than it should. Frankly, we are neither in an arcade room nor in the age of Dreamcast.
It is the multiplayer, fighting to break the panels behind the opponent or facing each other to reach the best score, where C-Smash VRS manages to extend a little more a replayability that will only be faultless if you are very happy with what you have just played.
My new worst enemy: the PSVR2 cable
With witchcraft-like motion control, offering mind-blowing precision and allowing you to place the ball where your head seems to have dictated it go, just a few challenges tighter than its physics should allow will raise your eyebrows.
No complaints either in the cleanness of its interface and the stability of some fps that could make you believe that you are in there, except for its surreal aesthetics, the only possible drawback is not the game itself, but the helmet of PSVR2.
Although the game recommends that you pull the joystick from the first moment to move from one side to the other, matching the lateral acceleration of the character with the blow you are giving with your arm is much more complex than it might seem, which makes you miss more than necessary shots that should not be a problem under normal conditions.
Those normal conditions are the fact of moving from one side to the other taking advantage of the space that, hopefully, you have in the room where you play, but if walking from here to there was already a problem with the cable dangling, doing it so quickly as demanded by a game as dizzying as C-Smash VRS it’s a tremendous nuisance.

As a game, there is little to blame C-Smash VRS beyond a certain laziness when it comes to offering more additional modes or even bots so as not to always have to resort to multiplayer, and luck finding a match, to go to something more than repeating arcade mode levels over and over again.
As an experience, on the other hand, despite the fact that the game, helmet and controller do their best to make you happy with it, the need to move with more ease than the cable allows, without the justification here for pointing to some great graphics that serve as an excuse, make playing C-Smash VRS be less intense and fast-paced than it should be.
