Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is also coming directly to Xbox Game Pass – and Microsoft has high hopes for this. Previously, there was a lengthy internal discussion about whether the new shooter part should be included directly in the game subscription.
New parts of the Call of Duty shooter series have been a goldmine for Activision for many years and have brought in huge revenue. So it’s no wonder that Microsoft spent a long time considering whether to integrate this year’s new part, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, directly into the Xbox Game Pass gaming subscription after the takeover of Activision Blizzard. As we now know, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will actually be included in the Game Pass from day 1 – and Microsoft’s hopes are high.
This is now apparent from a new report by Tom Warren of The Verge who consulted several sources. According to them, Microsoft has high hopes that this year’s shooter part will help to significantly increase the number of subscribers to its own gaming subscription, Xbox Game Pass – and thus also noticeably increase the revenue of the gaming division.
Warren also addresses the previously lengthy discussions about the pros and cons of Black Ops 6 in the Game Pass, ultimately taking the risk and betting that “this will help improve Game Pass subscriber numbers despite a busy holiday season for Xbox gamers and a promising next year.”
In May 2024, Microsoft took the plunge and confirmed Black Ops 6 for Game Pass from the day of release. Two months later, Game Pass subscriptions had already increased by up to 25 percent. In February 2024, the Xbox team announced that 34 million players across the various price tiers had a Game Pass subscription.
So it remains to be seen how the whole thing surrounding the Game Pass release of Black Ops 6 will work out for Microsoft and its business figures. Will the company take a step back next year if the Game Pass integration of the new shooter doesn’t work as expected?
