In 2023, the Call of Duty series could break with tradition. Because next year is said to be not a classic, new part of the series appear and instead only continue in 2024. This would be the first time in 17 years that there would be no annual CoD. But fans don’t have to despair: Warzone 2 should provide a replacement.
Incidentally, our shooter expert Phil also ventured a look into the future. In his detailed column he explains what the new genre trend after Battle Royale looks like – and what this means for current and upcoming releases:
Shooter
The new trend towards Battle Royale has long been established
Not coming in 2023 right
Call of Duty?
What Insiders Claim: Next year, no new Call of Duty in the classic sense should appear. Established insider Jason Schreier wants to know that – like the US website Bloomberg reported. That would mean that for the first time in 17 years there will be no annual installment in the series – the last being in 2005.
Why no CoD 2023? According to the Bloomberg report Call of Duty: Vanguard did not meet Activision’s expectations. Accordingly, one has allegedly come to the conclusion that new CoDs are published too quickly and at too short intervals. Warzone’s enduring popularity despite new releases like Black Ops: Cold War and Vanguard may also be partly to blame.
This is said to have nothing to do with Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard for a total of 68.7 billion US dollars. According to Schreier, however, it cannot be ruled out that any plans will change again once the deal is concluded.
In his column, Phil explains how the Microsoft/Activision deal can be a huge opportunity for Call of Duty if new games aren’t released every year. Yes, again:
opinion
The Microsoft deal is a huge opportunity for CoD!
How does it look for 2022? However, CoD fans should not be left out of the water in 2023, even if no classic Call of Duty is to come out this year. Because Activision probably has big plans for 2022 when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appears, which should be supplied with new content for at least two years.
According to unconfirmed rumors, Modern Warfare 2 also lays the foundation for Warzone 2, which could then appear in 2023. But this is not a classic Call of Duty, which usually comes with a single-player campaign and 6v6 multiplayer. Bloomberg also refers to an unspecified date for 2023 free2play online

Not officially confirmed yet: Last but not least, you should of course always keep in mind that this is an unconfirmed insider report. Despite a trustworthy and reliable source, this does not necessarily have to come true, for example by discarding or overturning plans. So be patient until official information becomes known.
