In a blog entry, Activision goes into more detail about the Ricochet anti-cheat system in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – and unfortunately that was already very busy during the beta and in the run-up to the release of the full version.
In the beta of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the Ricochet anti-cheat system was put through its paces – and unfortunately that hit a lot more often than normal Otto players might hope. In short: Even in the beta, numerous cheaters apparently got lost in the shooter.
The anti-cheat system made its debut in last year’s Vanguard and has since been tweaked in a new version. The version used in Modern Warfare 2 is said to be better at detecting cheaters, allows easier access to use newer techniques at a later date, and has more regular security updates.
The system already worked well in the beta: more than 60,000 accounts (!) were sorted out by the system in advance, so that these cheaters were not even able to gain access to the beta. During the beta, around 20,000 more accounts were transferred to cheating and removed from the test phase. For a beta test phase, these are impressive and unfortunately also somewhat worrying numbers.
The evaluation showed that the system was able to recognize and sanction around 72 percent of cheater accounts before they even entered a match. Anyone who still made it into the game from the cheaters was usually removed and excluded within a maximum of five games.
Minor problems with the system, which led to illegal bans, still existed during the beta, but according to the support team, they were quickly eliminated.
