Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Campaign Remastered dispenses with the multiplayer part of the shooter released in 2009. Only the single player story was reissued by Studio Beenox. Corporal Kuro and Sergeant Sascha plunged into battle again after ten years.
Sascha:
I think we should start with a brief outline of the campaign. Because of the ten years between the original and the remaster, not every gambler today should know what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is about. How would you summarize the events of the game?
Kuro:
Five years have passed since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ex-terrorist Zakhaev is celebrated as a martyr, Shepard is now general and “soap” MacTavish can suddenly speak. Vladimir Makarov is now leading the ultra-nationalist terror group. With an assassination attempt at Moscow airport (keyword: no Russian), he throws Russia against the United States. As a result, Russian troops invade the east coast of the United States.

We slip into the role of four different soldiers throughout the story and try to capture Makarov. Of course, more happens, but we won't reveal that here for spoiler reasons. But I have to be honest: The campaign jumps back and forth so often and is so hectic that it was difficult for me to get all of it halfway. How did you do
Sascha:
For me it was the same. It's a hallmark of CoD campaigns to throw several characters at us in constantly new locations. But after the long pause, it feels even more confusing and opaque than it used to be. First you are somewhere in the snow, then you go to Brazil in a slum, then you are suddenly in a gulag. Not even the cutscenes, which are intended as an explanation and introduction, help me to get everything sorted out. Whom I'm shooting is almost irrelevant. The biggest problem for me is the gameplay….
Kuro:
The Call of Duty campaigns have always been action-packed rollercoaster rides. We easily kill hundreds of terrorists in the favelas single-handedly. Where do they all come from ?! It's more like a DOOM-like power fantasy than soldiers who are currently in a horrible war. In the campaign you are actually just a guest of the fence. Modern Warfare 2 almost feels like an arcade shooter, only the light gun is missing. I don't think that's tragic, because blunt can sometimes be a trump card. Compared to more recent call-of-duty parts, Modern Warfare 2 looks like a relic from a bygone era.
Sascha:
The word onlooker hits it pretty well. I can play a little, but never too much and above all only within the strict framework that is allowed to me. I died in several places because I basically walked to the left, even though I should be to the right. From my point of view, this makes the whole process cumbersome, because I cannot bring any dynamics into the action at all. At maximum, my actions are praised by the AI colleagues, but seconds later it continues according to the instructions. The shooting is practically only on command and then usually very short.
Kuro:
Out of curiosity, I started the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign from 2019 again. Of course, the part also takes us by the hand, but the whole scenario seems more down-to-earth and more understandable. Each chapter gives different playful impulses, there are even quiet sections. It's still the old recipe, but the ingredients and quantities are better coordinated.
And then in Modern Warfare 2 there is of course the mission "No Russian". Even then it was a tasteless provocation for me that went completely beyond the target. How do you see the section today?
Sascha:
I find the chapter even more unpleasant and disturbing than in the original, which is mainly due to the graphically better presentation. I also share your opinion that this was solely a planned excitement. Activision and Infinity Ward always wanted to justify the mission as relevant in order to experience the horrors of terrorism. "No Russian" stands out solely because of the enormous violence. The assassination is actually the trigger for everything that happens afterwards. But in terms of content, it is so quickly eaten up that two missions later it is only a side note.
Because I just mentioned it: let's talk about graphics. You know last year's Modern Warfare and therefore the campaign very well. How does the MW2 remaster compare in direct graphics?

Kuro:
A completely new graphics engine is used for the reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Two infinity ward studios were screwed on for a period of five years. Especially when it comes to the representation of light and shadow, this new custom engine really flexes your muscles. However, it is not used for the Modern Warfare 2 remaster.
Rather, it looks like the same graphics engine that was used for Modern Warfare Remastered is being used. The difference to the new Modern Warfare is correspondingly clear. Modern Warfare 2 is by no means ugly, you just shouldn't expect graphics like Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 3 or Final Fantasy VII.
Sascha:
Thanks for the arrangement. I think the revision including 4K resolution and HDR use is usually decent and in a few places even chic. But the animations of fellow combatants and enemies are too often unnatural and wooden. That makes me smile because it makes the drama mood that is actually wanted ridiculous. The sound is fine, there is a lot of crackling and clattering out of the speakers. However, one should play in English: it sometimes sounds embarrassing when German voices try to imitate American patriotism.

Then we slowly come to the conclusion. I make no secret of really choking through the campaign. In the meantime, I can no longer gain anything from this rigid shooting-on-command structure. Although I had forgotten most of the story, I never felt entertained. To do this, developer Beenox would not only have had to modernize the graphics, but the entire game structure. The tight corset cuts off the fun because I don't feel like the main actor, but rather like some extra. I prefer to watch a big action film right away. What is your final verdict?
Kuro:
It just becomes clear that Modern Warfare 2 has been around for a few years. The campaign in the new coat of paint didn't really knock me off my feet either. It is a wild action festival that leaves logic and brains in the rain to stage spectacles in the great Michael Bay style. That might have been cool back then, but even then it couldn't keep up with the look of the predecessor Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. And without the multiplayer part, everything becomes even clearer.
