Being called Call of Duty Modern Warfare II are big words. In fact, call modern warfare These are big words already, but the novelty of 2019’s Modern Warfare and several really surprising moments made us briefly forget that we came from a saga in which the damn Eiffel Tower exploded.
Of the three experiences proposed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, only one of them does not disappoint because it is not up to par. The rest, on the other hand, is very far from the epic and fun that this saga was synonymous with for many years. Lucky that, the one that does remind us that we are facing a Call of Duty: Modern Warfaresaves the ballot by far.
A campaign from another franchise
Despite the fact that we already talked about it at length a few days ago, having rested for several days about what happened with the campaign of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, hasn’t softened my speech about her even a little bit. For whoever writes these lines, a firm defender of the campaigns of a saga that has always relied on excess and popcorn explosions to remind you that this is an action movie that is played, the one in this installment is soporific.
Buoyed by the success of the sequence of the assault on the house in the modern warfare of 2019, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 he tries unsuccessfully to try to replicate that tension by delivering a campaign that goes from stealth sequence to stealth sequence. From the constant explosions and mounted machine guns we’ve jumped to trying to figure out if there’s someone hiding behind the next door with a shotgun. And yes, sorry for the spoiler, there is always someone behind the door.
Overcome the duel of seeing how my favorite experience went down the toilet to boost a much more leisurely style of play, the truth is that as the levels passed I discovered that opening doors to find an unexpected surprise time after another was the least of their problems. His innovations beyond stealth, in the form of crafting traps and pipe bombs in levels with virtually no weapons or fighting heavily armored and heavily armed enemies, don’t work at all.
The problem, for the most part, is that after all these years no one did popcorn campaigns like those of a Call of Duty. That was his field and no one dared to step on his dirty work, but where he now tries to raise his head there are already quite a few examples that give him soup with a slingshot in what he proposes.
For the level of crafting and stealth to be fun you need multiple paths and options like in a Far Cry, for the disguise and silent kills to be attractive you need more variety of situations and possibilities like in a Hitman, to build tension as you go down a mountain while an army is chasing you, you need that fear of dying to be real as Medal of Honor already did in what was probably the only moment in which it managed to shine, and to create a car chase in which you destroy rival cars, as in Uncharted 2, the rest of the vehicles have to be more than just trains that roll down the road and don’t flinch when they’re shot in the wheels or run over by a truck.
It can be slow without being boring, but the tour of the campaign Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 go up a level further to show that, in addition, it can be tiresome. Conversations between soldiers, from first year of school, only pale even more when you go from repeating a mission for accidentally shooting a civilian to another in which you fly from an AC-130 an entire town full of civilians while someone screams excited by the explosions caused.
Special Operations: Unspecial
Controlled one of the most important parts of the game, it’s time to jump to an appendix that, despite always being several levels below how much they can get our attention the zombie way of the Black Ops, this time they have completely removed the mask.
three different missionsone to search, another to search and destroy, and a third to defend three positions during several waves, are the only thing that separates you between playing them once and not touching them again unless you want to grind weapons (and it’s not even the best place for that, better play Invasion).
Located in very specific areas of the new map Al Mazrah from Warzone 2, the idea behind these missions is to enter with a friend (online, no split screen option), complete the challenge as best as possible to get three stars and not have any claim to return to it with any of the new classes you will have unlocked.
The objectives will always be the same, the enemies will always be the same and the difficulty – yes you guessed it – will also always be exactly the same. It is the typical addition that at some point it was something else or had more ambition and along the way someone decided that it was not worth putting more effort into it.
Due to the shortness of the missions, the reduced possibilities and the small number of them available, it would almost have been better to wait to have new raids available that dress the idea a little more. To return to this mode, we will have to wait until December 14, when, by then, we will probably have more interesting things to do between DMZ y Warzone 2.
A multiplayer that lives up to its name
Although the smell of disaster was already predictable at this point, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 he had one last bullet in the chamber. One that, from what was witnessed during the beta, could well be the one that finally hit the target. I’m not going to lie to you, after previous experiences the fear was undeniably there and, before jumping into multiplayer, I was in a situation where anything was waiting for me.
To the rescue came a gunplay that still has few rivals, weapons that work wonderfully, a rhythm that never stops growing until the end of the game and, above all of them, maps that have catapulted me to the best moments of the franchise Call of Duty.
Those of you who know me already know that I have always been a strong supporter of the three-line maps introduced by Black Ops and that, when the saga was put in labyrinth mode with cut corridors and mousetraps that seemed made to measure for campers, my patience lasted very little.
Except on rare occasions, the three lines are very present in the maps of this Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2thus causing direct confrontations that are always the most fun and challenging, and preventing someone from taking a liking to a certain corner for a long time.
Everything that smells old, from the aforementioned scenario design to the return of mythical weapons, will delight those who have been growing between the shots for more than a decade. It is the only case in this game in which you can say out loud that you are facing a new modern warfareeven more than in the previous installment of 2019.
Despite missing the mark by getting innovative with failed ideas such as the new gunsmith or massive modes that end up being a sindio in which to run from here to there and kill bots they turn out to be your only hobby, I must admit that the strangest thing in the mix that I found strange has ended up being the most interesting of all his original ideas.
The perks, which are now divided into phases, getting two at the beginning of the game, another towards the middle, and a fourth in the last section -being able to arrive earlier depending also on your efficiency when playing-, turn out to be a generous boost that they invite you to play one way or another depending on what you have chosen.
The best example is in two classics such as Cold Blood or Conjuring, and it is that starting the game with them is not the same as unlocking them halfway through, thus causing a less linear experience during the encounters that, in the long run, translates into second parts that invite more to gamble and arouse more aggressive behavior on the part of the rest of the players. It may seem like a strange decision, but it is very successful.
iGamesNews’s opinion
Nothing would make me sadder than Call of Duty ended up becoming one of those sagas that abandon the story mode to focus on multiplayer -in fact, it has already flirted with it-, but at this point, and seeing the exhaustion of the franchise, it seems evident that here it is time to focus efforts or, As he was already venturing with this return, return to the starting point and stop experimenting.
Modern Warfare 2 He knows how to look to the past in his multiplayer so as not to lose his essence, but he fails to transfer that spirit that hooked us in his day to everything else. Today the franchise has so many open fronts that it does not seem very clear where to attack. We’ll see if the promised pause to which he will grab sooner rather than later serves to clarify his ideas.
