For a number of years, Sony had had a deal with Activision Blizzard for the Call of Duty shooter series, bringing exclusive benefits to PlayStation players. But that could now seem to be the end of it, because the partnership has probably expired.
For almost a decade, Sony has partnered with Activision Blizzard on the hit series Call of Duty – and PlayStation players have benefited from this to varying degrees in the form of exclusivities. At that time, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was initially exclusive to the PlayStation, other parts received modes and expansions a little earlier. For example, Modern Warfare’s Survival mode was exclusive to the PlayStation for a whole year, while Black Ops Cold War got PlayStation-exclusive Zombies content.
With the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard last year, a reduced scope of exclusive PlayStation benefits had already become clear, because the additional perks had already been reduced to a barely noticed minimum. Aside from Double XP events and a few in-game items, there wasn’t anything extra fancy here on the PlayStation – and in the future, that exclusive content is likely to be reduced to zero.
It was to be expected that this would happen anyway due to Microsoft’s purchase of Activision, but Sony now seems to have confirmed the speedy implementation. Sony PlayStation has now shown a graphic on the occasion of corporate strategy meetings, which listed the current marketing deals in the games area – and for the first time there was no trace of Call of Duty.
Titles still listed include GTA 5, Genshin Impact, the new Avatar game or Hogwarts Legacy – but Call of Duty is no longer on the list. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft and the Xbox will not have exclusive CoD content in the future.
