Call of Duty Black Ops 6 was released just a few days ago and is off to an excellent start. A new work in a very popular series, it seems to have managed to attract its audience while taking advantage of its integration into Game Pass. However, a new feature is already sowing discord.

Call of Duty Black Ops is finally back

Four years after Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty Black Ops returns as usual with a spectacular campaign, classic multiplayer modes and the very popular Zombies mode. The game’s story takes place in 1991 and is therefore set directly after Cold War and Balck Ops 2. If you are unfamiliar with the license and get lost, rest assured that you will only miss a few innuendos in the country. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is full of stories from Tom Clancy and follows Frak Woods, who is paralyzed after torture. After some events that we are going to show you, he decides to create an independent operations team.

In this film we find William “Case” Calderon, the main character, but also Troy Marshall, Sevati Dumas, the strange Russell Adler and Felix Newman, a former member of the Stasi (GDR secret police). Regardless, the game’s early numbers on Steam show that the audience is there, and that’s without taking into account the percentage of curious players who will try the title through Game Pass. We will undoubtedly face the eternal war between cheaters and development studios related to the game, or players criticizing the balance, but it is the tone that is currently dividing the community.

A paid improvement that’s hard to beat

In an official blog post, Activision says Black Ops 6 will launch with an enhanced headset mode that uses Embody’s Immerse Spatial Audio technology to increase the “directional precision of the sounds played.” Immerse Spatial Audio is a third-party technology already found in Cyberpunk 2077 or Final Fantasy XIV that promises to improve the spatiality of all headsets and headphones. In Call of Duty Black Ops 6, this enhanced headset mode features a Head-Related Transfer Function profile designed specifically for the title. Until then there is nothing special to say, we are in a classic technology partnership with a concrete application.

What goes wrong is that this improvement to the experience, “which takes into account the player’s physical characteristics, such as the shape of their ear or their head,” is not completely free. A free trial is offered, but full use costs $20 for 5 years. Apparently the players took the opportunity to talk about “pay-to-hear”. It’s particularly surprising that this option is built into the settings, especially since at high levels it can make a big difference in terms of enemy detection. At the moment, I’m not sure players who have long complained about the game’s audio quality are happy.
