Call of Duty is on everyone’s lips after Microsoft took over Activision Blizzard, but at least the next three parts of the shooter series should still be released for PlayStation. In this context, there were also rumors about the Battle Royale sequel Call of Duty: Warzone 2 – and last-gen players can apparently still have hopes in this regard.
Bloombergs The usually well-informed journalist Jason Schreier, in addition to the (unofficial) confirmation that at least the next three Call of Duty games should continue to appear for the PlayStation, also reported that in the coming year 2023 the Battle Royale successor Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is scheduled to appear.
This report was picked up and confirmed a little later by reliable insider Tom Henderson. He went a step further and reported that the spin-off sequel will focus on the PC and the newer next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. In short: Players on PS4 and Xbox One should probably no longer be able to enjoy Call of Duty: Warzone 2. However, this situation does not turn out to be quite so clear.
Henderson himself has tried his sources again and emphasized that there is currently at least a chance of a last-gen version. Whether this will actually be published also depends on the sales figures for the newer consoles by then. If the player base is too small for Activision Blizzard’s taste, a last-gen release could also be a possibility.
In this case, however, it should not be a cross-gen title in Warzone 2; rather, according to the information, a separate last-gen and next-gen release would then take place. The gamers of the different versions cannot then gamble with each other and would be separated in this respect.
Warzone 2 is said to be a completely new development; the first Call of Duty: Warzone would then be rebranded and could remain on the market as Warzone Legacy. The successor should then probably accept the previous Warzone name as the current part.
Of course we will keep you informed about the further development of the rumours.
