This week Activision launched the new Battle Royale part Call of Duty: Warzone based on the current Modern Warfare – and promptly landed an absolute hit. The number of players makes the competition look old in comparable periods.

The much-awaited release of Call of Duty: Warzone finally hit the stage this week, and fans of the shooter franchise were actually pouring in. As Activision has just announced, the new Battle Royale hit broke the mark of no less than six million players on the first day after the release.
The latest Battle Royale hit makes the competition in the popular genre look really old. To date, the surprisingly successful Apex Legends has been the fastest growing battle royale game. Respawn Entertainment's title counted 2.5 million players over the same period – a record that has now been pulverized. After three days, Apex Legends then had 10 million gamers.

Back then, the long-time Primus Fortnite needed two weeks to reach 10 million players – a number that Call of Duty: Warzone may or may have reached in the meantime, even if such confirmation is still pending.
And the success of Call of Duty: Warzone can also be read elsewhere: Half a million viewers have already watched streams of the game on Twitch. The action hit was able to drive the popular League of Legends from the sun.
In short: The use of a free-to-play model and the independent, independent publication compared to the paid Modern Warfare seem to pay off in full for Activision and Infinity Ward.
