Every year a new Call of Duty appears, usually with a Zombies mode. Years ago we could almost have expected a pure Zombies live service game within the successful franchise.
Raven Software is said to have once worked on Call of Duty: Zombies, a live service game within the long-standing and successful shooter series that would have focused exclusively on the zombies part. However, this game was ultimately discontinued.
Zombies mode had previously made its debut in Call of Duty: World at War, released in 2008, and subsequently proved very popular. The current Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III still has a Zombies mode, this time playing on an adapted map of the Warzone map Urzikstan.
Raven Softwaren’s title would have gone much furt her, as Michael Gummelt now states on his LinkedIn profile. Gummelt is a former employee at Raven Software, where he explains that he worked on an “ambitious new Call of Duty: Zombies live service project.” This was ultimately discontinued because of Treyarch. “Discontinued when ATVI Studio, which owns this part of the Call of Duty IP, wanted it back,” Gummelt added.
Would such a live service game with a full zombies focus be able to appear again? Only the future will tell, but Zombies fans probably have little to worry about. The Call of Duty planned for 2024 will reportedly be Black Ops Gulf War – and Treyarch will act as the lead development studio here. This basically guarantees that zombies will also play a role in this new part of the series.
An official presentation of the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War is expected in the summer of 2024, with the release as usual in the fall.
