This week at Gamescom, Striking Distance Studios introduced a new mechanic called Mutations that adds depth to the game. Callisto protocol fighting.
Mutations will take place through in-game creatures, called biophages. These creatures are prisoners of the Dark Iron Prison, altered by a mysterious outbreak. As the infectious disease spreads, it erupts from the body through a series of tentacles.
When the tentacles appear, you only have a short time to kill the virus by shooting the tentacles. Kill the virus and then you can take down enemies fast, miss and… well, try not to miss.
If you fail to take down the phage when the tentacles appear, the virus takes over the creature and triggers a series of mutations that make them more powerful. There’s no way to stop the mutation of multiple creatures at once, and you’ll face a swarm of enemies.
Combat will be a mix of ranged shooting and melee combat, using gravity weapons called GRPs or “Grips” that let you move quickly between the two.
The developers want players to have choices while being fearful in every encounter.
At gamescom, the studio revealed that halfway through the game, Jacob was thrown into the sewage system.
While it’s a survival horror game at its core, the team wants to mix in every kind of horror you’ll experience. At times, the protagonist tries to navigate dark corridors, at other times he falls into the depths of the prison health system. When this happens, you need to avoid environmental hazards, as shown in the video.
Over the next few months, developers will share more on the Callisto protocol.
It’s coming to PC, Ps4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 2.
