The 2024 Cannes International Film Festival is almost upon us and will once again present plenty of masterpieces that film lovers among you definitely shouldn’t miss this year. But it’s not just exclusive film screenings that delight visitors, as viewers at home can also become part of a major award ceremony.
Because on May 25, 2024, Hollywood legend George Lucas will be awarded the Palm of Honor during the closing ceremony in Cannes. The well-known director, producer and founder of Lucasfilm looks back on a film career spanning over 40 years, ranging from popular classics such as the “Indiana Jones” series to the entire “Star Wars” universe.
With his first film “THX 1138” in 1971, Lucas worked with director Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather” series) and dealt with science fiction and the role of good and evil for the first time. Themes that became his trademark and played a fundamental role in his subsequent classics.
Lucas’ film debut was even screened in Cannes, which led to a lifelong connection between the filmmaker and the French film festival and is now finally sealed with the Palme d’Honneur award. Lucas commented on this great achievement in the official press release from Cannes as follows:
“The Festival de Cannes has always had a special place in my heart. I was surprised and delighted when my first film, THX-1138, was selected to be featured in a new program for debut directors called Directors’ Fortnight. Since then “I have returned to the festival several times in various capacities as a writer, director and producer. This special recognition truly honors me and means a lot to me.”

Last year, Oscar winner Michael Douglas (“Ant-Man”) was pleased to receive a Palm of Honor and “Indiana Jones” star Harrison Ford was also awarded a surprise Palm at the 2023 Film Festival.
