The video game industry is in a complicated situation right now, but Capcom has just shed light on it. There is hope for the future.
If you follow the news surrounding the video game world, you should know that the medium is in crisis. There have been layoffs everywhere since last year. Embracer, EA, Microsoft, no one is spared. Most recently, it was PlayStation that caused a particular stir with around 900 layoffs. Apparently we haven’t been smiling much lately. Luckily, Capcom just made an announcement that’s a little contrary to everything we’ve been told.
In a press release, the company made a big revelation. From the 2025 financial year, it will increase the salaries of “new starters”. Currently we are told the price is 235,000 yen. Then it will rise to ¥300,000, which is quite tempting. In Capcom’s own words, it counts too “Continuing investment in human capital and attracting exceptional talent”. The studio will undoubtedly be hiring a lot of people, which is good to know after all these waves of layoffs that are sapping morale.
The Japanese company adds that it will make a special payment for all employees in the 2024 financial year. We don’t know exactly what that means, but it seems quite significant. Of course, there are also plans to increase the workforce as quickly as possible. In general, Capcom says that’s what it wants “Dealing with the problems that affect society” et « increase company value and build a relationship of trust with employees and shareholders.”. Obviously this is an indication of the worrying condition the property is in. Therefore, it is a commendable decision and we hope others follow this example.
