CD Projekt to end Gwent support in 2023 and hand control over to the community

CD Projekt has announced that it will stop supporting Gwent Hand over control to the gaming community in 2024.

A total of 72 new cards will be released in April and July 2023, with the last batch arriving in September. These drops will complete the card pool.

Coms Manager Pawel Burza and Game Director Vlad Tortsov discuss the future of Gwent (31 minutes)

According to game director Vlad Tortsov, it might be “unconventional” to hand it over to the community, but it’s a solution for the game’s ongoing balance and livelihood.

“We want to provide the Gwent community with the right tools and opportunities to drive balance changes moving the game forward,” they said. “We’re working on a solution that would allow players to play directly in the Gwent client.”

Tortsov said that users of the client don’t need a development background to use the client because it’s not overly complicated. That is, it will have fewer powerful tools, such as those used by the development team.

This means you won’t be able to create new cards or invent abilities. However, balancing will be easy, allowing players to decide which cards need to be nerfed and which need to be buffed.

In other news, another Wizarding title is set to be eliminated.

CD Projekt’s studio Spokko has announced that it will shut down its mobile ARG The Witcher: Monster Slayer in mid-2023. It will be available in the app store until January 30th and will go offline on June 30th.

“We’re proud we were able to create a location-based AR experience that captures what it’s like to be a Witcher in real life, and give the community the opportunity to fight monsters from the Witcher world up close and personal,” the official announcement said.

“This is what makes The Witcher: Monster Slayer such a unique experience in the Witcher series. We are so grateful to share all of this with such an amazing and passionate community from all over the world. Th is journey is full of tasks , events, and adventures would not be possible without you – after all, together we have defeated over 100 million monsters worldwide.”

Spokko will also be merged into CD Projekt Red, the developer of The Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077, with possible layoffs.
