The Portal series of games is one of the most iconic of the famous Valve studio. Admittedly, a large part of this success comes from the games’ superb gameplay, but the two titles in the license offer far more than that. In this new installment of JV LORE, we’ll try to explain why Portal’s dystopia is so successful.
The two Portal games released in 2007 and 2011 shaped the history of video games. With respective Metacritic ratings of 90/100 and 95/100, the critics were unanimous. But what is the reason for this success? The great strength of the puzzle license is thatwell found balance between innovative gameplay and a detailed universe, while leaving a secret. The merit is all the greater since the puzzle game genre is hardly represented in dystopias. Although Portal is linear, gameplay remains the focus of the experience. The story always serves the gameplay, not the other way around. From then on, the game offers us a real freedom that mixes with our sequestration. The player finishes the game feeling that the scenario is as well written as it is natural.
