Firaxis just made a cameo appearance during the opening livestream of Gamescom 2024, giving us our first taste of Civilization VII gameplay via a new trailer, and announcing a specific release date: February 11, 2025.
We knew this trailer was coming because studio and publisher 2K said it ahead of time after announcing the game at Summer Game Fest, just to make sure no one missed out on marveling at little historical figures moving around a map, likely much like how real-life friendships can break down over who’s looting whose city.

Firaxis Games’ Ed Beach took the stage to introduce Civilization VII, saying it was “the biggest, most ambitious game Firaxis has ever made.”
Enjoyed it? Well, after the opening night livestream, Firaxis will host a Civilization VII gameplay showcase on its Twitch channel, which you can watch at 9:30pm BST (that’s 4:30pm ET, 1:30pm PT, and 10:30pm CEST). “Over 20 minutes, we’ll share exclusive insights from the development team into this revolutionary new chapter in the series, including our vision for the game and its innovative new features,” the studio wrote of what to expect from the showcase.
One thing we can also tell you about Civilization VII is that it won’t be using the 2K launcher on PC, saving you some hassles and letting you jump straight into trying to claw your way to a cultural victory, though you’ll be playing as Julius Caesar and your goal from the outset will be to blow everyone to pieces.
